How to Earn the HIPP Sourcing Point on the APUSH DBQ

HIPP stands for Historical situation, Intended audience, Purpose, and Point of view. The sourcing point isn't earned by identifying these facts about a document - it's earned by explaining why they matter to your argument.

Earns the point

For at least 2 documents, the essay explicitly explains WHY or HOW the document's Historical Situation, Audience, Purpose, or Point of View is relevant to the argument.

Doesn't earn the point

The essay only identifies the author, their job, or the date - without explaining why that's relevant to the argument. Identification alone never earns this point.

Real example

Point missed

"...(Doc A, Doc C, Doc D)..."

Parenthetically citing documents by letter doesn't earn this point - you have to explain, for at least two documents, how the author's background, purpose, or intended audience shaped what they wrote and why that matters to your argument.
